Melissa Summerfield
BIOGRAPHY: Melissa is a native Bozemanite having had the opportunity to live in the valley her entire life. She studied art, art history and philosophy at Montana State University and was particularly interested in how cultures and past civilizations expressed their history and values through the art and architecture left behind. In 2000 she earned an Art History degree from Montana State University and wrote her undergraduate thesis on local architect Fred Willson, which later led to three historical publications which she co-authored: Faces of Freedom – Gallatin Valley Remembers WWII, 2002; The Gallatin Collection: A Pictorial History Vol. II, 2003; and Historic Homes of Bozeman, 2005. In 2011 Melissa finally picked up the brush again and hasn't put it down.
Melissa belongs to Three Rivers Artists Guild of Bozeman member and is a past member of Southwest Montana Arts (SMArts) and. She has studied with Loretta Domaszewski, Kara Tripp and David Mensing. Her work as been shown in multiple juried shows across the Gallatin Valley and local businesses.
HONEYBEE STUDIOS: ART EDUCATION When Melissa is not busy painting you can find her volunteering by teaching art history art lessons to elementary aged school children and working as an artist in resident at schools in the Gallatin Valley. She also is a past docent with the Emerson Cultural Center's School's in the Gallery program, giving docent lead tours thru the Jessie Wilber Gallery and teaching art lessons to kids and adults that apply to the current show.

ARTIST STATEMENT: Over the years I have always returned to capturing the landscapes that surround my hometown -- its mountains, rivers, fields and always the big skies; with an emphasis on the interplay and movement between these elements. I think of each piece as a view into my “internal landscape,” and I welcome each viewer into these familiar yet wondrous places that we are so fortunate to call home. -Melissa Summerfield
