MACK

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY:
MACK - Margaret Anne Campbell Kohler
MACK grew up in Alaska on the family commercial fishing boat; fishing for crab, halibut and salmon. Very early in life she developed a great love for Art and singing Opera. She attended conservatories (Eastman School of Music & Oberlin Conservatory), famous music festivals and has performed with Orchestras and Opera Companies all over the US and Europe. Through all the travels and music she always painted as a form of gift giving, decorating everyone's apartment and “creative outlet” (creative outlet #2).

When the Opera career got in the way of raising her family, she decided to hang up the viking horns and head for the mountains where she could paint and raise her family in peace! She has enjoyed finally having a chance to put onto canvas what has been dancing in her head for all these years. Still, there never seems to be enough time to put it all down....so, she is constantly making sketches of images she will eventually have time to create in full. MACK currently resides in beautiful Bozeman, Montana with her 3 children and husband (Bern Kohler, MSU Chemistry Professor). Besides painting and Mothering, she sings Opera roles with Intermountain Opera, is an Opera Board Member, and spearheads crazy Opera events like the Opera Run (creative outlet #3)!

ARTIST STATEMENT:
My art is always bright, whimsical and, hopefully, thought provoking.
My characters are multi-ethnic and are loosely based on Yup'ic Eskimo masks from my childhood, as well as ethnic influences from around the world and the American West/Northwest. Most of my “characters” are women so far, because women are the first to be judged physically by others and themselves. MACK “characters” are to be viewed by their attributes alone. It is the best part of their spirit that adorn their clothing and crowns. It is my hope that we will become blind to our own prejudices and start seeing our sisters and brothers for the good that they offer this world.
I paint everything in bright colors because, no matter the personality type, there is always hope for a brighter tomorrow. Besides life dancers, I LOVE painting joyful cowboy boots, mountain vistas, fish, flowers and the Earth. Each piece has a statement to make, usually trying to make the world a more accepting place, while celebrating the beauty of the human spirit and our magnificent planet!
May we protect both with a vengeance!
