Grace Dyk
Artist Statement:
Rural settings inspire me, especially since I’ve lived in the Gallatin Valley all of my life and was raised on a small farm where we raised grain, chickens, a few cattle, and pigs. Where I lived I always seemed to be surrounded by mountains. Therefore my art is a depiction of those scenes. I find myself appreciating the warmth and shadows that also help create those beautiful landscapes.
Presently, I work in water color, oil and acrylic and have a desire to continue to learn more about those mediums as I study. Watercolor is a wonderful medium in that it can be magical on the paper! Oil and acrylic are freeing for me because I decide what to paint and it can be changed if needed. Both of them can tell my story of rural America.
Biography:
Grace Dyk grew up in the Gallatin Valley. She attended Montana State University and received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She taught 31 nonconsecutive years during her teaching career and officially retired in the spring of 2012.
In the l990’s she began to study art under various teachers and attended workshops. She is a member of the Bozeman Artists Group, SMarts. She has done several commissioned paintings. Grace has been in several art shows. She received an Honorable Mention for a watercolor called, “Safely Grazing” from the MSU Agricultural Department in November 2000.
Grace says, “When I look at all the beauty around me, I have a passion that grows deep inside me to make me want to place the beautiful scenes on watercolor paper or canvas. I realize I in no way can perfectly reproduce the beauty God has given us to enjoy. However, I hope in my art to be able to allow the viewer to get a sense of the beauty I am enjoying as I work on a painting or drawing. Art is anywhere you see something that pulls at you to recreate it in your own style.”
